Classical and Gothic: studies in the history of art

MICHAEL MCCARTHY

Continuing concern with the Gothic Revival in architecture is reflected in the first pair of essays, which offer corrections to the account given in the author's book of 1987, The Origins of the Gothic Revival. Irish antiquities are the subject of the third essay, devoted to Thomas Wright of Durham's publications and drawings of the mid-18th century. The drawings and publications of Greek temples in the second half of the century and their influence upon the practice of architecture in Ireland is the subject of the two following essays, and the final two essays are concerned with Roman archaeology in the works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, compared with works of his contemporary antiquarians and friends Sir Roger Newdigate and Andrew Lumisden.

A Michael McCarthy bibliography is also included.

Michael McCarthy, professor of the history of art in UCD from 1994 to 2004, edited and contributed to Lord Charlemont and his circle: essays in honour of Michael Wynne (Dublin, 2000).
